Description

More ink has been spilled in writing about the American Civil War than any other event in the history of
our nation. From the perspective of Southern rebels, the war was one to preserve the lucrative system
of enslaving human beings for the use of their labor. Most northerners entered the war hoping to
preserve the Union. By the end of the conflict, four million formerly enslaved men, women, and children
enjoyed a hard-won liberation. This course will examine the causes of the Civil War, its prosecution, and
the process of Reconstruction that followed.
