Political Supply Chains--Pg 176 Original post: Mon 3/5/2012 at 10:54 PM

I would have to ask the question, what is wrong with United Arab Emirates running the 6 US major ports.  What difference would it be than allowing the current London-based company?  Both are friends of the United States and if economically it is a better deal for the United States, why not?  That being said, this decision should be educated and not political and the cynical side of me always thinks decisions such as these are political. There must be a strong back up system in place to ensure supply chains will not shut down due to terrorism.  If these ports are shut down due to terrorist activity the effect could be detrimental on all of the goods shipped into and out of United States ports.  However, regardless of who manages the ports, terrorism could happen since no city, state or nation is fully immune to terrorism and a solid disaster plan must be in place.

I agreee with Sarah, I feel that terrorist attacks could happen at any time, it does not matter who has control over that ports. Yes, if the ports are subject to terrorist acts, then this will greatly effect the US business supply chains, however the businesses need to make sure they are prepaired for situations like that.

I agree completely with Sarah's points.  If the US were to implement a full policy requiring all port operators to be US entities, I could more likely support intervention.  However, attempting to pick and choose which operators we will allow to be contracted to run our ports seems to be a lose-lose situation.

One side note is that this type of rule is in place for assets such as nuclear power plants.  For a high risk asset such as this I am much more comfortable with the additional restrictions.
