It is very apparent by the disaster of the lightening that struck GetSmart they must backup their network somewhere other than the building. In the case of an emergency or natural disaster like the one that recently occurred, the loss of documents created within their organization could be the end of their business. A procedure needs to be put in place so that this does not occur. While it can initially be expensive it could at some point save the company. GetSmart needs to invest in a space, safe and even underground, that they can store drivers to continuously back up all of their information. Here in Missouri there are several places, like the Ozarks, that can be a safe haven for this pertinent information. Obtaining the place to store this information is the first step. The next step would be to determine who in the organization will be allowed to have any information with regards to this disaster plan. Security is a concern of every person in today’s society so it is very important that confidentiality is the most important thing when choosing who will be a part of this team. It is important that when developing the disaster recovery plan there are levels of authentication, access control, and encryption in place which will ensure that only authorized individuals can gain access to this network, they have access to only those applications for which they are entitled and that they cannot understand or alter information while transfer it from the home office to the disaster recovery location. I believe that this plan will ensure that not only the confidentiality of the customers is safe but also that GetSmart will have a disaster recovery plan in place that will allow them to restore all of their information in the event of another disaster like the previous one.

Nicole,
How often would GetSmart update their saved information?  If the save site was away from the business, who would take the data there?  How would it be saved/transported (USB drive, CD Rom, etc.)?  What if the information was necessary for work each day?  Would someone be responsible for commuting to and from the save site each day?  Would all department's data be save separately or together?  Also, what would happen if there was  a major disaster that took out the save site?

Those are great questions Emily. This is actually something that is done by at least one large organization that I know of and first off if the secure site was damaged by a disaster it would have to be a very large disaster that would destroy much more than just the organizations data base- it is a very secure location. The information would need to be backed up daily onto external hardrives that in turn would have to be transported to the secure location and depending on how much work the organization does on a daily business it would need to be transported no more than monthly. Therefore if a disaster were to hit the local office at max the only information lost would be no more than a month old.
