Fiji Water ran a marketing campaign in which the slogan was "The Label Says Fiji Because it's Not Bottled in Cleveland". This campaign created quite a bit of public controversy which they were not planning on getting. The city of Cleveland retaliated with ads showing that Fiji water had traces of arsenic in it, which led to a back and forth bashing between the two. Marketing campaigns need to be thought out clearly and tactfully. Every company tries to run ads that are different and create excitement for their brands. Fiji Water made a big mistake in this ad, because they offended many markets, which will take lots of time to heal their brand image in those particular markets. The domino effect can also occur for Fiji with customers from other markets offended by the ads could switch products also. Fiji should have ran an ad apologizing to the city for the ad. Instead they stayed in the public eye running ads back and forth with the City of Cleveland. Many blogs from the article were from present or former residents of Cleveland bashing Fiji. This is a great example of how a simple ad can create a black eye for a company. With the power of social media, companies need to have checks and balances in place to eliminate controversial ads that can hurt the companies brand image.

These days companies need to be very careful with the image they portray. Something like this which they might have thought they were doing good caused them lots of bad PR. This could have turned away many Fiji water drinkers to competitors. With the many different competitors in the marketplace it is very important that companies keep a close eye on what the public sees and views the company as.
