Corporate Use Of Social Networking Original post: Wed 10/19/2011 at 10:27 PM

I would definitely say that social networking sites like Facebook, MySpace, and LinkedIn are using disruptive technology to run their business.  These sites give customers a new way to do things. These sites actually addict people to their sites by creating online communities.

Some business challenges concerning social networking sites are that businesses now need to monitor social networking sites. Something that is posted negatively about a business or company could be seen by millions of people in a matter of seconds.  Most large companies now have a team of people that monitor social networking sites 24/7.  They are trained in how to solve issues that come up on sites like these. Another issue is that some people are addicted to these sites.  This could cause unproductive workers.  Blocking or monitoring social networking sites usage can avoid business challenges like these.

Some characteristics of a social network are online communities where users of the same interest, education, jobs, etc can connect and network.  These sites allow users to share information and connect with people that they meet on the sites along with people they know.  Some security issues are that people can access other peoples personal information with a few clicks. Also, social networks are more prone to be hacked due to all the information that can be shared in the sites.

Some current social networking trends include updating where you are at a certain location, liking a company on facebook and getting a coupon or discount,  and viral videos.  These are all created by the consumer.  Consumers demand these advancements and are created and people become attached and cannot live without them.

Social networking sites can generate revenue by all the add- on applications costing money to use or add features.  Facebook has feature where you can purchase gifts to send to friends for birthdays etc.  Lastly, companies can add coupons that are printed from their social networking page that can only be used in the store or online by the social network user.  These target them to go out to the site and get those coupons.

Social networking change day to day. There is always a new update or new feature added daily.  New companies are  like Google Chrome  are trying to capture the market by adding features that existing social networks don’t have.  This disruptive technology has definitely taken over the world!

Many business don't believe they can manage the loss of productivity of social networking addicted employees over the positive business aspects of allowing it throughout the organization. many have seen the negative aspects of allowing all employees to have unlimited access to email and internet because a small part of those technologies help the business.

You are the owner / boss: What do you do?

I think it can be managed by employee or job title. Companies these days have a social media department that are in charge of all social networking sites. That group would be allowed to use the social networking sites as much as they want. With technology these days you can block sites very easy by computer.  So I would suggest blocking it for everyone other than the group that is assigned to monitor social networking sites. This would ensure that the group that is supposed to be productive in other departments stay productive!

Companies have the ability to block social networking sites on company computers, but they cannot block the sites on the individual employee's cell phone. Companies can try to prevent their employees from using social networking sites entirely, or they can encourage them to only use the sites during break periods.  Do you think a break only strategy could work?  Or do you think that employees would take advantage of this type of strategy?

A break strategy could work for some people other people will take advantage of the strategy.  IT departments need to monitor employee activity and can track exactly what happens.  Actually companies can monitor phone activity now. I think not showing trust in employees could cause unhappy employees. Always giving employees the benefit of the doubt will work in most cases!
