Social networking sites have opened a new avenue of marketing for business by using disruptive technology. Business were once limited in the means of marketing in all aspects from products to brand image. Today, with the use of social networks such as Facebook, business are able to promote everything they are about via the internet in a way that ‘fans’ can ‘like’ their business and feel as though they have an in to the companies promotions.

The social media does promote challenges for businesses in that they allow hundreds, sometimes thousands, of people to get negative impressions of a business that one single customer could have a problem with. Because of social networking cites like Facebook, people are able to ‘voice’ their thoughts and opinions immediately about anything for all of their ‘friends’ to see. This is when businesses are faced with the challenge of how to handle those negative comments. They can use this to their advantage in some ways by trying to make things right with those unhappy customers.

There are several different characteristics of all of the social networking sites. While MySpace was primarily for reconnecting with old friends and staying connected with new ones it allowed individuals to create a ‘page’ that defined who they were. Facebook, while it doesn’t allow an individual to create a customized ‘space’ it has allowed business to create a place to market themselves and customers to connect with its favorite businesses as well as their friends, family, etc. Linkden on the other hand is considered a more professional social networking site. Here professionals and businesses can stay connected in a professional manner via the social networking world.

At this point I don’t know how these social networking sites can add revenue by any other means that selling banner and text ads. They have become so popular because they are free. I think not only is it an advantage to the people who use these sites but the business who promote themselves as well. I believe that is why they have become such a big hit for businesses because they can use them as a marketing tool and the cost is minimal.

Businesses are supposed to register their pages differently than an individual. Why shouldn't the social networking sites charge a business for their page?

In response to why they shouldn't have to I'm not saying they shouldn't have to and I wouldn't be surprised if that isn't coming in the near future but I think at this point the whole idea of these social media webites is that they are free. I think that is why Facebook, Linkden, etc are so popular because there is no charge to express opinions, ideas, keep in contact with people from across the world on not only a personal level but a professional level as well.

Nichole,

I think you brought up a very good point about the negative impressions that can be formed of businesses by one unhappy customer posting their opinion online for countless people to see.  I think this is something all businesses are going to need to learn how to effectively handle.  While it is great that businesses can communicate and advertise to the world they must remember that consumers can do the same.  I believe that when things do turn negative it is on the businesses to make sure they handle the event in professional manner and maintain a positive image of themselves.

Dustin/Nichole,

Good points on businesses handling the negative posts from customers on social media sites.  Positive and negative publicity on social media sites is a new challenge businesses are facing.  Businesses must handle all posts tastefully and tactfully.  Businesses must realize that the statements they make and post on social media sites can hurt their business just as much as bad customer service.
